My First Week at Cambridge: More Than I Ever Imagined
I’ve just finished my first week studying Creative Writing at the University of Cambridge — and to say it’s been amazing feels like an understatement.
It’s a strange, exhilarating thing to step into a place you’ve only dreamed of and find it feels both humbling and strangely familiar. From the moment I arrived at Newnham College, settling into my student dorm (yes, a real student dorm — single bed, dormer windows), I knew this experience would stretch me in all the right ways.
What’s stood out the most? The people.
Writers, thinkers, dreamers — all from different corners of the world, each bringing their own stories, cultures, and perspectives. Whether over breakfast in the dining hall, sharing ideas in workshops, or swapping stories on the bus to Ely, I’ve been constantly inspired by the diversity of thought and heart in this community. It’s reminded me how powerful it is to connect with people who see the world differently.
Of course, there’s the learning itself — the real reason I’m here.
Diving deep into the craft of Creative Writing with lecturers who are both generous and sharp has been invigorating. I’ve unpacked structure, voice, and character in ways I hadn’t before. And yes — my novel. That messy, beautiful draft I brought with me? It’s already evolving. I’ve cut scenes I once loved, rewritten paragraphs that needed more bite, and found clarity I didn’t even know I was searching for.
And then there was Ely.
A place I might never have visited if not for this course — a town rich with history and beauty, where the towering cathedral left me quiet and reflective. Moments like that make this experience feel bigger than just study — it’s about stepping into a wider world.
As I head into Week Two, I’m holding onto one thought:
This journey isn’t just about becoming a better writer. It’s about becoming more open, more curious, and maybe even a little braver.
Cambridge — you’ve already exceeded every expectation.
